Darlin Review: Ocarina of Time

I….am not even going to try to introduce this. Let’s get straight to it!!!!

LEGEND OF ZELDA: OCARINA OF TIME 3D
DARLIN RATING: 5 stars

STORY: Oh goodness gracious, if you haven’t even at least heard of this video game by now I don’t even know what to say to you. Check it here.

GAMEPLAY: First off, let me just get this off my chest. I never played Zelda. I grew up with a Sega Genesis and a Playstation, not until a few years ago was I introduced to the Nintendo world of gaming. I played the very first Zelda game released on Super Nintendo and that was quite ridiculous if you ask me…extremely complicated and just confusing. I never played Ocarina of Time on N64, well, cause I never owned one. I was just recently introduced to the fantastic world of Hyrule, and my god, what have I been missing?! I see now why these games consistently get a full star ratings. This game has a perfect balance of almost everything: adventure, puzzle, action, drama, etc. Definitely one of the best games I have played in a long time, hands down.

The graphics for this game is beyond phenomenal…especially for a hand-held console. The graphics are better than most of my Wii games. It’s almost as beautiful as Skyward Sword, which was the newest Zelda game to be released earlier this year. And better yet…IT’S IN 3D! I never thought I’d say this, but….playing a video game in 3D is a much cooler experience than I expected. What’s really wonderful about the 3DS is that it has a switch that allows you to control the “intensity” of the 3D effect or even turn it off completely. Trust me, this comes in handy after playing for about six straight hours, my eyes began to burn.

As far as controls, I am use to playing with a controller that has about two-four extra buttons so it was quite annoying to constantly move back down to the touch screen to use various weapons or items I have equipped. I don’t think it would have been difficult to have added two extra buttons where my pointer fingers are, having a “R1” “R2” “L1” “L2” sort of a deal going on. Other than this (even though that really is Nintendo’s fault), the controls and movement on the DS is pretty flawless. I would recommend turning off the motion sensor in this game since it gets really annoying when you are using your slingshot/arrow/clawshot and you have to move your DS in the direction you want to face in the game. I didn’t even discover that setting until halfway through the game, it made gameplay SO much easier.

I beat this game in about a week in a half. Of course, being as naive as I am, I thought that was a long time to beat a game. Yet, I come to realize, I beat it way too quickly. I didn’t put down this game, I constantly had my 3DS in my hands the moment I wasn’t working. Not many games have this sort of effect on me, I was hooked, from the moment I started the game to the very end. Being new to the Zelda world (and slightly falling in love with Link…he’s a babe, okay) I am highly impressed, and of course, disappointed in myself for not discovering these games sooner.

Overall? A MUST HAVE! If you can’t afford to buy it, hell, I’ll lend it to you. Especially if you played the original Ocarina of Time. They completely revamped the look and did a superb job doing so. Even though I didn’t play the original, I can tell how much they put into remastering this game. Let me tell you, I’ve seen developers try to remaster old games and failed miserably (ahem, Halo 1 Anniversary remastered that came out earlier this year….don’t even get me started on how awful that game is). I mean…this IS the FIRST game I have given five stars, if I am not mistaken. So, do yourself a favor, and treat yourself to this game. You won’t regret it my fellow gamers.

Until next time!

Looking Back: The Darlin is Out: Art Basel Miami Beach

This past December, while you were battling holiday shoppers at Lenox, I was weaving in and out of sideways-walking art gazers, tearing through art fairs like on a scavenger hunt. I tried to experience as much as possible in super quick time so I could bring you this wealth of information:

At Pulse.

DO: Go to Scope, Pulse and Verge art fairs. Plan to spend a minimum of 3 hours at each but there’s enough to keep your interest piqued for longer. Entry is around $20 but worth it if you plan to spend your time there. Art Asia is in Scope – and it is the highlight of great international art.

DON’T: Go to the Red Dot tent to buy “hotel art”. Unless you’re checking out NFN Kalyan.

DO: Take long breaks between viewings at large art fairs! It’s tiring and your brain/eyes/heart are over stimulated! Stop, go outside and regroup.

Garden lounge at Pulse. A great place for a breather.

DON’T: Wait in lines for the “hot” party. There are too many parties going on to waste your time waiting.

DO: Check out the Wynwood Arts District, but do it at night when everyone is drunk and it’ll feel like a post-apocalyptic war zone (in a GOOD way).

At Wynwood Arts District. Made me think of Sarah!

DON’T: Miss out on all the amazing music that happens during Basel! Big names are often closer than you think but are often overlooked because of subtle promotion or intentional secrecy.

DON’T: Brush off the free, random popup art shows, but know you’ll probably have to pay to get into the good stuff.

DON’T: Enter a large gallery with the “hangries”. I learned that one the hard way. Pack a snack because when you’re on Collins at 10 pm and there’s nothing open but hotel restaurants with $25 dumplings.

At Scope. All glitter everything!

Note: I did not attend the “official” Art Basel Miami at the convention center because I was advised against it.

At Pulse. The stuff dreams are made of.

Did any readers go to Art Basel Miami Beach? What did you do? What did you like?

Love from the road,

Elizabeth

HEY Y’ALL!!

THIS WEDNESDAY (February 22), ABV Gallery is hosting its 13th volume of Drink + Doodle, featuring 12 artists who come together and create one-of-a-kind works (which comes in handy because I need new wall art!). I’ll be there at 8PM SHARP to support my wonderful beau, Benjamin Lande, and all the other amazing artists! There will be a DJ + drinks and I may/may not have to smuggle in a 6-pack of Cherry Coke. DO NOT MISS THIS ATL!

Show Reviews x More Shows x SHOWS OH MYYY

Who says girls can’t like metal?

Monday’s show at The Drunken Unicorn was SUCH a good time! Local ambient/black metal gods Nigredo opened up and blew me away! How amazing to have such talent in our own backyard! The Body and Braveyoung were equally mind-blowing.  It was like being sucked into a swirly, black glittery hole. Hypnotic and heavy, the swells/ominous feedbacks and drones are just what this girl needed, and even got me head-banging along with the crowd (hey, this is what hairspray is for after all!).

Here are a few other February shows that are gonna be bonkers. I hope to meet you all there! But, if that whole “having to work in the morning” thing gets in the way, check these artists out. Some of them make their music right here in Atlanta!

Thursday, February 9th: Colour Revolt (ahhhmazing) with Right Away Great Captain! (a hometown hero, Andy of Manchester Orchestra) and Of the Vine. Colour Revolt has an amazing live show, packed with so much fury and passion that it’s impossible to want to stand in the back with your face buried in your iPhone. Listen to “Moses of the South”–

Sunday, February 19th: A Pop-Punk Extravaganza at Wonderroot. Atlanta denim punkers Campaign with Daytrader (whose debut EP I listened to over 209887 times easily. You can listen to the whole thing too, preferably loud with your hairbrush as your microphone). Also opening are ATL’s The Disregardables and Some Mistakes, who’ve I’ve never seen but I’m excited to hear ‘em.

OH! I am TOTALLY working on another mixtape for stream/free download! If you missed last month’s, I got ya covered. As usual, it will feature some local favorites and I CAN’T WAIT TO SHARE!

Your Favorite KVLT Princess,

-s

PS: I want to thank my FAVORITE unicorn, The Drunken Unicorn for being so awesome and putting on such fun shows. I also think they have the BEST Shirley Temples in all of ATL! <3<3<3 Find me on the Interwebz and keep track of all the fun shows I go to! I promise I have good taste. <3
