Weekly Magic with Sarah Mincher

Hey there fellow unicorns. I had such a magical week! Lets dive in.

On monday I met with 3/4 of Sorry, Darlin (it’s really, REALLY hard to get us all in the same place at the same time and when it does happen I either pee myself out of excitement or drink too much. If my girls are real lucky it’s a fun combination of both) at The Bookhouse. We talked so loudly about so many personal things that I am proud to say I’m pretty sure a table moved because of us. Sorry, Darlin!

My lovely bloggers! (Sarah sidenote: Damn I need a haircut! Time to call AmberLampz at Shear Love!)

My week was mainly composed of lining up summer party dates, trying to track down a pair of red cat ears and well, parties. Duh. OH and I also tried to rearrange my apartment and got a table stuck in my hallway for three days. I had to literally crawl over it every time I wanted to leave my apartment, get food, change costumes, go to bed, etc. It was funny for like five minutes then I wanted to smack myself for trying to measure furniture with magazines and all the jokes these highly bruised knees would get me from the MJQ door men. See I thought the door frame was 2.5 Vogues and the said table was 2 vogues (makes sense…right??), but man was I wrong. I had to actually go buy a tool kit, take the entire table apartment then set it back up in my bedroom. I felt like my own boyfriend, which btw I totally am. But seriously, even as I write this I’m slighty scared it will all fall apart at any moment and antics will ruin yet another piece of something.

But whatever. I’m more interested in night clubs than Ikea, though for the record I would never turn down a swedish meatball. I had way too much fun at Sloppy Seconds this weekend. As in I was kind of out till 10am and it was glorious. I feel I met the super cool kids who run Gotta Dance Dirty, one of the biggest and BEST blogs in the whole world! Here’s some fun photos from Sloppy Seconds courtesy of our buddy OhSnapKid and drunk blackberries everywhere!

Troy Kurtz of Overthrow and GDD in Sorry, Darlin! Plus Yen Nguyen, who is also totes cool.

With my Darlinz Elizabeth and DJ Taradactyl! I love my girls :)

Fighting club crime + saving lip gloss everywhere with TEAM GLITTER!

See you next week Atlanta for another addition of WEEKLY MAGIC WITH ME, SARAH MINCHER! Plus don’t forget to come out to our Sorry, Darlin disco dance parties for a chance to be featured in one!

Weekly Magic with Sarah Mincher

Hey Atlanta! I had such a fun past week I thought I’d share it with y’all!

On Cinco De Mayo I attended my favorite Drag Queen Daxclamation Art Show in Midtown hosted by my long lost new besty Barry Brandon. It was super fun, though I always get slightly confused at gay bars. Like I enjoy all the compliments about my hair and purse choices, air kisses and gossip, but I don’t get offered nearly as many free drinks. Or maybe none at all. It’s a real catch22 for a party girl, ya know? Then us Unicorns pranced over to Star Bar for my love Michael Payne + Scooters crazy fun dance party, Hot Box.

This sums up Hot Box and my relationship with Dax in general.

After a post disco hang with the crew of MJQ and a grilled cheese at The Majestic till 7am, I finally went home.

I slept all day Friday.  I am officially no longer 18.

Saturday was jam packed! I dragged my still sightly cinco-ed out booty to Shear Love Hair Salon and got a lovely style out by Amber Lampzzz. I highly recommend her, my hair stayed fresh till 4am (seriously!) plus she’s kinda hilarious. Double win. Feeling feroossh, I headed over to Encloymedia to do video interviews at the 3Mod Fashion Show (I am practicing to take over Oprah’s spot if the world doesn’t end when she retires in 2012).

The show was mostly swimwear with this really cool retro feel to it, and I loved it. I also really loved eating cheese + bacon sandwiches from the concession stand in front of the models as they waited around backstage. I’m sure Oprah would approve.

Then it was off to host our weekly dance party Lollipoppin at MJQ Concourse with my girl DJ Taradactyl. We have a new tradition of saturday night DJ Booth pics, so check out this weeks gem.

And to top off a great night, super famy actor Alan Cumming came to our party and totally loved it! I always knew Sorry, Darlin girls were secretly Bond Girls.

Hope you had a super sweet weekend as well! Stay tuned for my next weekly magic, which may or may not include a blind date re-cap I think I might go on just for blog material and free food. Now that, my darlin loves, is dedication.

Sorry, Darlin X DJ Skeet Skeet

Hey Atlanta! As some of you may know, we have the pleasure of being a part of the infamous monthly Overthrow celebration known as SLOPPY SECONDS.  Only the biggest and well, hottest talent is booked out for this event, and Januarys was no different. Party King DJ Skeet Skeet brought his brand of LA crazy to Atlanta, was kind enough to let me interview him AND sent me a really cute baby picture to attach. See??

"Future DJ"

And without further ado, Mr. Trevor McFredies.

Hey DJ Skeet Skeet! Did you have fun spinning at Sloppy Seconds? I had such a great time.

Ya I had a great time, I couldn’t hear much on stage cuz the monitor blew out but I’ve known Cory and Dillon for yearsss. So it was really nice to play with both of them, and Caleb is an old friend as well so always great to be involved with something he’s doing. Plus I got to meet you, so duh 5 star evening.

5 Stars all the way. What other cities do you absolutely love to play in?

Sydney, Australia it reminds me of LA so much it kind of feels like another home but at the same time kids are rowdier and have a really deep passion for dance music which makes my job reallly easy haha.

I hear Australia has a great dance scene. And when you aren’t out creating nightclub magic, what do you listen to? Any new artists you are really feeling lately?

As far as new stuff: The Weeknd, Gumshoe, Natalia Kills, Madi Diaz + Jamie Woon.

It seems like you are sort of a modern jack of all trades- a highly successful DJ, designer, promoter, blogger, etc. Do you have any advice for young, aspiring brand entrepreneurs?

I guess my biggest advice would actually be to not be a jack of all trades and to instead be a master at one… My biggest thing for 2011 is to make producing and playing music my #1 priority the rest of it should kind of fall into place. But beyond that just be aware of who you are and how you’re special then just harp on it til somebody pays attention haha.

Skeet Skeet making magic at SLOPPY SECONDS.

Do you have any specific goals in mind for 2011? Any new EatSkeet projects we should be on the look out for?

Putting out my album and finishing the Gumshoe album as well as another secret project I have in the works.

And uh, we hear your quite the ladies man. So I JUST have to ask for all our girl readers out there, do you prefer blondes, brunettes or redheads?

I’m gonna go ahead and say i’m an equal opportunity employer although my last few girlfriends have had dark hair… but fuck it if you can make me laugh and can handle somebody who’s on the road and in the studio as much as I am you can you can rock whatever hair color u want.

Thanks for the interview Skeet Skeet! You guys can keep up on his party hijinks via his Twitter or totally funny blog EatSkeet. And in my personal opinion, I say you should stick with brunettes!

Candy for Your Ears and a Treat for Your Feet

Hey there Darlinz. Sarah Mincher here.  As some of you may know, Sorry, Darlin is entering her 2nd magical year of Atlanta adventures and I have been not so quietly looking for an intern to join in the ever expanding party fun.  And uh, brush my hair, feed my unicorn and text boys for me.  You know, “professional” stuff. So without further ado, I am really happy to welcome Ashley Gunter to the team!  Be ready to see our Baby Darlin helping out at events, reviewing concerts and being part of the general Darlin mischief.  Plus, she already suggested I call her “Mini Minchy” so needless to say, I have a really good feeling about this.  Now, meet our Baby Darlin…

Hello ATL Babies!

I’ve been brainstorming all week about what to write and trying to narrow it down a specific focus, but I figured I write best when I’m writing about things that I know and love, so that’s exactly what I plan to share with all of you! This covers a wide range of topics, obviously, but I’ll try and keep it focused on some of my favorite things: live music, film, books, sweets, art and shoes. Haha we’ll see how this goes for now.

My name is Ashley, by the way, and I’m Sorry Darlin’s newest intern! As an onlooker, it has been really cool to see Sorry Darlin as a company and a brand in itself grow and succeed. I’ve always been a supporter of the Sorry Darlin vibe and message, and I’m very excited for the opportunity to contribute and be a part of all the crazy Sorry Darlin shenanigans.

I’m excited for this upcoming weekend, but honestly I’m way more excited about my Tuesday night at The Masquerade. One of my favorite bands, Little Dragon, is playing in Hell (downstairs). Little Dragon is an electronic band from Sweden that isn’t necessarily new but a band that I feel is still fairly under the radar, considering how much positive response they’ve received since the release of their most recent album Machine Dreams in 2009. Their first full length was a self-titled album released in 2007. They’re both great, but Machine Dreams played through on my iPod for over a week straight. It’s got the perfect mix of moods throughout the album from dancey, upbeat tracks, like “Runabout” and “Looking Glass,” to perfect bedtime tunes like “Fortune” and “A New.” There are very few albums that I can honestly say I enjoy every song enough to never skip a track, and for me, Machine Dreams falls into this category.  The band is made up of an adorable Swedish- Japanese singer, Yukimi Nagano, who the band is actually named after, referring to the nickname she received in the studio after becoming frustrated often, and her close high school friends, Erik Bodin (drums), Fredrick Källgren (bass), and Håkan Wirenstrand (keyboards).  They were featured on two of the tracks off Gorillaz album Plastic Beach and are returning to Atlanta for the second time since having released Machine Dreams. Their last show in Atlanta was at the Drunken Unicorn, and sadly I couldn’t make it, but that’s why there wasn’t even a chance I was missing this one!

In the same night in Heaven, just up the stairs of the Masquerade, two other great bands are playing as well, Tokyo Police Club and Two Door Cinema Club. I’ve seen Tokyo Police Club before. They put on a great show at the Tabernacle the last time they were here, but I wouldn’t mind sneaking off for a bit to catch some of Two Door Cinema Club’s set. This alternative rock band from Ireland came onto the scene with their album Tourist History back in March of 2010 and has been getting more and more popular ever since. Touring with Tokyo Police Club is gaining them great exposure, too. Their album is really catchy and pretty happy and fun all the way through.

It seems as if The Masquerade is the place to be for music in the ATL on Tuesday, whether you’re in Heaven or Hell. Hope to see you all out shaking your asses or bobbing your heads or, you know, whatever awkward half-dancing we all do at indie shows.

<3 Ash

P.S.  Confession: I wore stripper heels out to MJQ a few weeks ago, which after a few drinks is quite the mission for a girl whose everyday wear shoes are horseback riding boots and chuck taylors. In spite of this, I have been inspired to up my heel game and test the limits with some shoes I wear out. I’ve been seeing a lot of these lately on shoe blogs and I’ve decided I must have a pair!!! Next Mission (mission impossible maybe?): Heel-less heels.

Also check out my favorite Little Dragon track, “Never Never Below”!! Xoxo

(KINDA) EPIC SNOWSTORM.

Hey snow bunnies! If you live in Atlanta like the rest of the Darlinz and I- I’m sure you have been enjoying the snow storm that hit a few days ago and brought Hotlanta to a total standstill!

…Or maybe not.  I’m actually going kind of stir crazy and have nothing to eat but gift bag candy because I mainly use my kitchen/refrigerator for extra shoe storage (what, I’m like the new modern girl). So anyway, I ventured out twice to grocery stores (and almost died in the process.  We already know I’m not the best driver, ice does not help my chances) but they were so packed I couldn’t handle waiting in line.  So then I came home and spent almost two hours on Zifty.com trying to figure out something I wanted to eat.  Of course, I couldn’t find anything AND I also didn’t want to have to “get dressed” when I answered the door.  Thats just so much work.  So I went back to a nice bag of jolly ranchers and I’ve been keeping myself occupied with one of my favorite activities, LURKING THE INTERWEBZ!  And just like I suspected, Atlanta’s tweets/stories about the cities current climate are making me laugh.  What’s your favy silly snow #HASHTAG so far?

I’m a #SNOWMAGEDDON girl myself, but probably because it reminds me of Ben Affleck and animal crackers (which would go like, so awesome with this snowstorm).

ps- If anyone wants to deliver me mexican food, I will trade for candy.

New Years Eve via Lady Flashback!

Hey there blog babies! I’m super excited to welcome a new girl to our team- Lady Flashback! As a huge fan of Sorry,Darlin I was thrilled when Sarah approached me about collaborating efforts with her blog and mine, LadyFlashback.com. I have been blogging about fashion, photography, home decor, parties, DIY, and all things vintage for over 3 years now.  Relocating to Atlanta has opened up many doors for me in  the internet world as well as nightlife. Just last month my blog was awarded the superlative for “Hip Style Blog” in Atlanta Magazine, see the article here. Being a long time fan of photography it dawned on me that shooting parties professionally was my calling since I was already taking 100+ photos any given weekend. This opportunity to shoot with Sorry,Darlin blows my mind, extremely excited for adventures to come!

Our first experience together just so happened to be NYE, what a purrrfect night to shoot for the VERY FIRST TIME-huh?!?!

The Darlin ladies and I agree, think it went marvelous, take a look for yourself over at the photo gallery.

Here are my top 11 favorites of the night we rang in 2011 at MJQ:
